IMF Boosts 2026 Southeast Asia Growth Forecast Due to AI Investments

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has adjusted its economic growth forecasts for major Southeast Asian economies, predicting a 4.4% increase in 2026. This revision, up from an earlier estimate of 4.1%, is attributed to heightened investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and technology infrastructure, underscoring the region’s burgeoning role in the global tech landscape.

In its latest World Economic Outlook report, the IMF also revised its projection for global economic growth in 2026 to 3.1%, a slight increase from the previous forecast of 3% made in July. The projection for 2027 remains steady at 3.4%, just below the 3.5% growth recorded in 2025.

The report highlights that investments in data centers and other infrastructure supporting the global AI boom are pivotal in driving the improved economic outlook for countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. These nations are increasingly becoming key players in high-tech supply chains, which is boosting demand and exports.

Conversely, China’s economic growth forecast was slightly revised down to 4.5% for 2026, reflecting challenges such as higher global oil prices and prolonged uncertainty. This is a decrease from the 5% growth registered in 2025.

The IMF cautions that global headline inflation is expected to rise to 4.7% in 2026 from 4.1% in 2025, driven largely by higher energy and food prices. However, inflation is anticipated to ease back to 4.1% in 2027. The organization also warns of potential threats to the global economic outlook, including ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, trade tensions, and financial market volatility.

Moreover, the IMF suggests that government measures to counteract increased energy and food costs should be temporary and targeted, to avoid straining public finances. Countries that are energy importers or have limited exposure to the technology sector may face higher costs and tighter government budgets, impacting their purchasing power and economic stability.
