Inspect Fuselages for Cracks, Boeing 737 Max Operators Instructed

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated that operators of Boeing 737 Max aircraft conduct inspections for potential cracks in a critical structural component of the fuselage. This directive targets about 471 airplanes, with the inspections slated to commence in September. The focus of these inspections is the bear strap, a crucial structural sheet that provides support to the fuselage around the exit doors. Previously, similar cracks were discovered in older models, specifically the Boeing 737 Next Generation, leading to inspections of those aircraft as well.

While no cracks have yet been reported in the 737 Max fleet, the FAA has highlighted that the aircraft shares a similar design and manufacturing process with the older models, raising the possibility of encountering the same issue. The agency cautioned that any undetected cracks might compromise a significant structural component, thereby affecting the aircraft’s overall structural integrity.

Boeing has been proactive in addressing this issue since it was identified in 2019, collaborating closely with airlines to ensure safety. The company is in favor of the compulsory inspections, emphasizing that they are essential for detecting and rectifying any problems before the cracks advance to critical stages.

This latest development adds another layer of scrutiny to the Boeing 737 Max, which has already been under intense examination following previous safety concerns and issues related to manufacturing and engineering quality. The aircraft model was grounded worldwide after two tragic crashes occurred in 2018 and 2019, which significantly impacted its reputation.
