Renowned Canadian voice actor Peter Cullen, famous for bringing to life iconic characters such as Optimus Prime and Eeyore, has passed away at the age of 85. His family announced that Cullen died peacefully on Wednesday at his Los Angeles home, surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Montreal, Cullen launched his career in Canadian television and radio before becoming a key figure in the world of voice acting. He first lent his voice to the legendary Autobot leader, Optimus Prime, in the 1984 “Transformers” animated series. His portrayal of the character became so beloved that he reprised the role for seven major Hollywood films from 2007 to 2023, as well as various spin-offs.
In addition to his celebrated work in “Transformers,” Cullen was also the voice behind Eeyore, the perpetually gloomy donkey from the “Winnie the Pooh” series. His association with Eeyore spanned numerous television shows, films, and video games, beginning with “The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.”
Cullen’s versatility as a voice actor was further showcased through roles such as KARR, the evil counterpart to KITT in “Knight Rider,” and the creation of the distinctive clicking sounds for the creature in the 1987 film “Predator.” He also voiced King Kong in the 1976 remake of the classic film. Cullen often credited his older brother, Larry, a former US Marine Corps captain, for influencing his portrayal of Optimus Prime, encouraging him to depict the character as strong yet non-aggressive.
The legacy of Peter Cullen’s work is underscored by a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011 for his role as Optimus Prime, and a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023. Over his extensive career, Cullen’s voice became synonymous with some of the most beloved animated and science-fiction characters, securing his enduring impact on popular culture.
