UN Chief Commends Indonesia’s Role in Peacekeeping and Multilateral Cooperation

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has commended Indonesia for its significant contributions to global peacekeeping and multilateral cooperation. Speaking at the Foreign Policy Circle Talks in Jakarta, Guterres highlighted Indonesia’s active role in international diplomacy, particularly its involvement in organizations such as the United Nations, ASEAN, the G20, and BRICS.

Guterres praised Indonesia’s diplomatic efforts across the Asia-Pacific region and the Global South, recalling the country’s historical role in promoting non-alignment and national self-determination during the 1955 Asian-African Conference in Bandung. He emphasized that these efforts have solidified Indonesia’s status as a key supporter of multilateralism.

The Secretary-General also underscored Indonesia’s substantial involvement in UN peacekeeping missions. Currently, nearly 2,000 Indonesian military and police personnel are deployed across seven UN missions worldwide. During a visit to a peacekeeping training center in Sentul, West Java, Guterres met with Indonesian personnel preparing for deployment to the UN mission in the Central African Republic. He lauded the country’s training initiatives and its steadfast commitment to international peace efforts.

Guterres noted that Indonesia’s diplomatic engagements and peacekeeping contributions have been instrumental in fostering dialogue and cooperation between nations and regions. Additionally, he highlighted the collaboration between ASEAN and the UN in areas like conflict prevention, sustainable development, and human rights, further affirming Indonesia’s role in global peace initiatives.
