PM Anwar Urges Overseas Johoreans to Return for State Election

As the Johor state election approaches on July 11, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called on Johoreans residing and employed in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to return home and cast their votes, emphasizing the crucial role each vote plays in shaping the state’s future. During an event in Kulai, Johor, Anwar particularly encouraged young voters and those working overseas to actively participate in the electoral process. He clarified that while the election results will not impact his role as Prime Minister, they will significantly influence the direction of Johor’s state governance.

Anwar took the opportunity to delineate the responsibilities shared between the federal and state governments. He assured that the federal administration would continue to manage key infrastructure projects like the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone and the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link. Meanwhile, he urged state authorities to concentrate on local concerns, including the maintenance of public housing, aiding small traders, and enhancing community services.

The Prime Minister highlighted the improvements in public housing seen in other Malaysian states, achieved through collaboration with the Housing and Local Government Ministry. He encouraged Johor to bolster its local governance efforts in a similar manner. Anwar’s remarks suggested a vision for enhanced cooperation between different levels of government to address local issues more effectively.

Furthermore, Anwar compared the welfare distribution systems of the federal and Johor state administrations, pointing out that federal financial aid is directly transferred to beneficiaries, bypassing the need for in-person queues. He mentioned plans to expand federal welfare assistance in the future, although he withheld specific details about this expansion. This comparison underscored his broader message about the importance of efficient governance and service delivery at both the federal and state levels.
