Trump Accuses Iran of ‘Wrong’ Public Claims as Ceasefire Talks Remain Fragile

President Donald Trump took direct issue with Iran’s public statements regarding ceasefire negotiations on Thursday, writing in capital letters on Truth Social that Iran was “WRONG” to suggest it was merely reviewing the US proposal. Trump claimed that Iranian representatives were privately seeking a deal even as their government crafted a different public narrative. The stark contradiction, according to Trump, revealed the true desperation of a country he described as militarily obliterated.

At the heart of the ongoing diplomatic dispute is a 15-point US ceasefire proposal. Among its major elements are sanctions relief for Iran, a reduction in its nuclear capabilities, restrictions on its missile programme, and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is of vital importance to global oil markets, and its future remains a key sticking point in negotiations. Iran has rejected the proposal even as the US describes an agreement as nearly within reach.

Tehran has put forward its own terms through state television, demanding that strikes targeting Iranian officials stop, that guarantees against future military campaigns be provided, that war reparations be paid, and that Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz be formally recognized. These conditions are fundamentally at odds with Washington’s framework. Resolving the differences between the two positions will demand creative and sustained diplomacy.

The toll of the conflict on human life has been immense. More than 1,500 people have died in Iran and nearly 1,100 in Lebanon, with additional deaths across Israel and the region. Thirteen US service members have also been killed, and the displacement of millions of people in Iran and Lebanon represents one of the largest humanitarian crises of the current era.

Trump’s Thursday post was a direct indictment of Iran’s negotiating conduct and an ultimatum to change course. With military operations continuing alongside diplomatic efforts, the conflict remains on a dangerous trajectory. Iran’s response to Trump’s challenge will likely determine whether the coming weeks bring peace or a deepening of this already costly war.
