New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Potential Jakarta Visit Under Discussion

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung are in preliminary discussions about a potential visit by Mamdani to the Indonesian capital. This follows a meeting between the two leaders in New York during the U20 Mayors Summit 2026, where they explored shared challenges such as public transportation, traffic congestion, flooding, air pollution, and urban development financing.

Governor Pramono stated that while there have been reports of Mamdani visiting Jakarta for a conference in late October, no confirmation has been made. Discussions regarding the visit are still in their early stages, and an announcement will be made once plans are finalized.

During their meeting, Mayor Mamdani showed interest in Jakarta’s initiatives to alleviate traffic congestion and expand public transportation. Governor Pramono highlighted the Transjabodetabek project, a regional transportation network designed to connect Jakarta with its surrounding areas, as a key development in these efforts.

Another topic of discussion between the two officials was municipal financing. Governor Pramono shared Jakarta’s plans to issue municipal bonds, known as Jakarta Bonds, to fund infrastructure and development projects. In response, Mayor Mamdani offered to facilitate cooperation between New York’s and Jakarta’s finance teams to exchange expertise on the issuance of municipal bonds.

The ongoing dialogue between Jakarta and New York reflects the willingness of both cities to collaborate on addressing urban challenges and exploring financial strategies for sustainable development. As discussions continue, further details about Mayor Mamdani’s potential visit to Jakarta are expected to emerge.
