UN Secretary-General Calls for Lasting Ceasefire in Gaza Ahead of 2023 Anniversary

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza as the region approaches the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel. In a statement, Guterres emphasized the need for a lasting political solution, urging both parties to expand humanitarian aid and adhere to international law.

Guterres condemned the attack by Hamas, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals and led to the capture of 251 hostages. He also highlighted the severe consequences faced by Palestinians, noting the extensive loss of life, displacement, and destruction in Gaza. According to health authorities in Gaza, more than 74,200 Palestinians have died as a result of Israel’s military operations in the area.

Reflecting on the ceasefire announced in October 2025, Guterres acknowledged that while it provided some relief, it failed to ensure lasting security or adequate humanitarian support. He urged renewed efforts to establish conditions that allow both Israelis and Palestinians to live with security, dignity, and their rights protected.

Guterres called for an end to the suffering on both sides, stressing the importance of moving towards peace and recovery. His appeal comes as the international community continues to grapple with the complex dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
