Indonesia has taken a significant step in the realm of artificial intelligence by becoming a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO). In a recent meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Indonesia’s Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto emphasized the country’s dedication to establishing a global AI governance framework. This framework aims to promote equitable development, prioritize human-centered innovation, uphold national sovereignty, and embrace inclusive multilateralism while aligning with United Nations principles.
During these discussions, Indonesia expressed a desire to secure a prominent role within WAICO’s secretariat. The country also called for enhanced collaboration with China in the fields of artificial intelligence, investment, and trade. Minister Airlangga underscored the importance of expediting market access for Indonesian exports and encouraged Chinese companies to increase their investments in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, the digital economy, and industrial parks.
Furthermore, Airlangga reiterated Indonesia’s support for China’s upcoming 2026 chairmanship of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). As part of their efforts to strengthen economic ties, he proposed organizing a bilateral business summit. This summit would coincide with a scheduled meeting between President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia and President Xi Jinping of China, aiming to deepen economic cooperation between the two nations.
