Thailand has voiced its concerns to China regarding the recent delivery of military tanks to Cambodia, cautioning that the action might destabilize the fragile ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. The issue was brought up by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping last week, as reported by Thailand’s foreign ministry. The timing and nature of the military shipment, officials noted, could further complicate the already tense relations between the neighboring countries, despite existing ceasefire agreements.
According to Thai authorities, Cambodia received 39 Chinese-made T-59D battle tanks under an ongoing military cooperation pact. There is currently no evidence to suggest that these tanks have been stationed near the Thai-Cambodia border. Nonetheless, the situation remains delicate as the two nations have experienced strained relations since the violent border clashes that occurred last year. These disputes are often rooted in disagreements over land and maritime boundaries, which are influenced by colonial-era treaties and historical maps.
China has consistently maintained that its defense cooperation with both Thailand and Cambodia is a standard practice and not aimed at any third party. Earlier in the year, China also provided Cambodia with a Type 056 guided-missile corvette. Despite the concerns over the recent tank delivery, Thai officials have expressed appreciation for China’s neutral stance and its efforts to mitigate regional tensions. They emphasized, however, that the resolution of disputes should primarily come through direct dialogue between Thailand and Cambodia.
In addition to addressing the border issues, Thailand and China have agreed to initiate a new dialogue mechanism that would involve their foreign and defense ministers. The first round of these talks is expected to concentrate on addressing cross-border scam operations. Through these discussions, both nations seek to strengthen cooperation and build a framework for resolving potential conflicts more effectively. The recent developments underline the complexities of geopolitical relations in Southeast Asia, where historical grievances and modern alliances continue to shape the diplomatic landscape.
