Indonesia Leverages Nickel and Copper for AI Infrastructure Development

Indonesia is leveraging its abundant critical mineral resources, particularly nickel and copper, to enhance its position in the global artificial intelligence (AI) industry. According to Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria, the country aims to use these minerals to build resilient, efficient, and sustainable digital infrastructure that can create greater domestic value.

Nickel and copper are essential components in AI infrastructure, including batteries and electrical equipment, as well as transmission networks and systems that support data centers. Indonesia’s significant contribution to global mined nickel production, accounting for about 62%, positions it as a key player in the mineral supply chain. Patria emphasized that this advantage should be underpinned by responsible processing, environmental safeguards, traceability, and sustainable labor practices.

However, Patria noted that developing AI infrastructure in Indonesia requires more than just mineral resources. Reliable electricity, fiber-optic networks, data centers, cooling systems, skilled workers, and effective governance are also crucial. The country is focused on utilizing its mineral wealth, burgeoning digital economy, and expanding technology workforce to establish itself as a regional AI hub. This strategy is expected to generate higher-value jobs and enhance domestic technological capabilities.

Indonesia’s comprehensive approach aims to integrate its mineral resources with broader technological advancements to drive growth in the AI sector. As the country seeks to capitalize on its natural advantages, it is also committed to ensuring that the growth of its digital infrastructure is both sustainable and beneficial to its economy.
