Mark Rydell, the acclaimed director who earned an Oscar nomination for the 1981 film “On Golden Pond,” has passed away at 97. He died of natural causes at a retirement community for entertainment professionals located in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles. During a career that spanned several decades, Rydell became known for his ability to draw powerful performances from a host of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors.
“On Golden Pond,” one of Rydell’s most notable works, brought together the talents of Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda. The film achieved great success, garnering 10 Oscar nominations. Both Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn took home acting awards, though Rydell lost the Best Director award to Warren Beatty for “Reds.” Nevertheless, the film was a triumph at the box office, grossing over $119 million worldwide, and marked Henry Fonda’s final film performance, for which he won his only Oscar.
