Iran has accused Qatar of hindering its investigation into the disappearance of three Iranian pilots amid a recent conflict. Tehran asserts that these pilots went missing following an incident and claims that Qatar is obstructing efforts to determine their fate. However, Qatar has firmly denied these allegations, stating it is not holding the pilots.
Mohammad Bagherzadeh, an official from Iran’s armed forces, expressed frustration over the delay, noting that an Iranian Air Force expert team has been awaiting permission to enter Qatar for months to investigate the matter. He has urged Doha to grant access to the team and called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to assist in resolving the issue. Iran has previously reported recovering the body of pilot Majid Kazemi, who was reportedly killed during an attack involving the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, has strongly refuted the claims that the Iranian pilots are being detained. He explained that Qatar had contacted the Iranian pilots after they allegedly violated Qatari airspace. According to al-Ansari, Qatar took defensive actions only after failing to establish communication with the pilots. He added that Qatar’s search and rescue teams actively worked to locate the pilots and their remains, and coordinated with Iran to transfer the remains of one recovered pilot.
Qatar has stated that Iranian authorities were invited back in April to send a team to the country to receive detailed information regarding the search and rescue operations. However, according to Qatar, there has been no response from Iran to this invitation. This dispute arises amidst ongoing tensions in the region involving Iran, the US, and other countries, following the outbreak of conflict earlier this year. Qatar has been involved in diplomatic efforts to ease these tensions and facilitate dialogue between the involved parties.
