Thailand has taken a significant step in bolstering its border security with Cambodia by completing a 1.3-kilometer segment of a permanent fence. This development comes in the wake of last year’s armed clashes between the two nations. The newly constructed barrier is located in Chanthaburi province and is made from reinforced concrete panels topped with steel mesh and concertina wire, designed to endure small-arms fire according to Thai military officials.
The Thai government plans to extend this fencing by more than seven kilometers from the completed section, with further expansions under consideration. Authorities are currently evaluating other suitable locations along the 817-kilometer border shared with Cambodia. Any future construction will be contingent upon the terrain and environmental factors to ensure the project’s feasibility and sustainability.
The border area remains under tight military surveillance after past territorial disputes triggered two rounds of armed conflict last year. These confrontations included artillery and air strikes, resulting in significant casualties and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people. Fortunately, ceasefire agreements eventually brought the hostilities to a halt.
While the newly constructed fence aims to provide long-term security, the Thai military emphasizes that strategic planning is vital for future expansions. The focus remains on ensuring that each segment of the border fence is both practical and durable, taking into account the unique geographical challenges and environmental conditions of the region.
