In the wake of intensified Russian drone and missile attacks, at least 12 people have lost their lives in and around Kyiv, marking a sixth consecutive night of strikes targeting the Ukrainian capital and its critical infrastructure. Among the fatalities, eight were in Kyiv, including six railway employees at a depot, and four more were reported dead in the nearby Boryspil area. The attacks also left several individuals wounded, including children.
Ukrainian authorities reported that the overnight offensive involved a substantial number of drones and ballistic missiles, with Kyiv and Odesa bearing the brunt of the assault. Despite Ukraine’s air defenses successfully intercepting many of the incoming threats, several managed to hit their intended targets. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that these attacks exploit the shortage of US-made Patriot air-defense interceptors, which are crucial for defending against high-speed ballistic missiles. He emphasized that Russia plans its strikes to maximize destruction and that their effectiveness increases when Ukraine’s air-defense capabilities are insufficient.
The recent surge in Russian attacks has significantly impacted Ukraine’s railway network, with six of the fatalities being railway employees. The attacks have damaged railway facilities, causing disruptions to services and adding strain to a transport system vital for both civilians and wartime logistics. The use of jet-powered drones by Russia, which are reportedly harder to intercept, has compounded the difficulties, forcing residents to endure prolonged periods in shelters and further disrupting daily life in Kyiv.
In response, Ukraine has launched strikes against Russian military and energy infrastructure, including oil facilities and warehouses, in efforts to exert economic and military pressure on Moscow. This escalation occurs amid a deadlock on the battlefield, with little progress towards a diplomatic resolution. Ukrainian officials are appealing to Western allies for more air-defense systems, especially as winter approaches.
Despite these ongoing tensions, international efforts to resolve the conflict remain limited. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to work towards ending the war, emphasizing the importance of shifting focus from continued hostilities to achieving peace.
