Myanmar’s leader, Min Aung Hlaing, who is supported by the military, is visiting Vietnam to improve relations with Southeast Asian countries and attract foreign investment. During his time in Hanoi, he is expected to meet with Vietnamese President To Lam and other senior officials. Additionally, he will participate in a business forum alongside members of his Cabinet.
The visit underscores Myanmar’s intent to bolster economic cooperation with Vietnam, a nation with which it shares longstanding military and economic ties. However, recent years have seen a decline in bilateral trade. This visit is part of Myanmar’s broader strategy to rebuild regional relationships and encourage new investment opportunities.
Since Min Aung Hlaing assumed the presidency in April, he has increased diplomatic activities, visiting various countries across Asia and Europe. This outreach is particularly significant following years of strained relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) due to Myanmar’s military takeover in 2021. The country has faced restrictions on its participation in high-level ASEAN meetings because it has not implemented the bloc’s peace plan.
Western governments have also imposed sanctions on Min Aung Hlaing and his associates due to the military takeover and subsequent human rights violations. Despite these challenges, the Vietnam visit represents another attempt by Myanmar’s leadership to reestablish regional ties and improve its international standing.
