Malaysia is seeking approval from Nepal to dispatch a team of DNA experts to assist in identifying victims of recent catastrophic floods and landslides. Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan announced that Malaysia has made a formal request to send these specialists, with the DNA identification process anticipated to commence following the conclusion of search and rescue efforts. The objective is to match DNA samples from recovered bodies with those collected from the families of missing Malaysian nationals.
In preparation, Malaysia has already gathered DNA samples from the families of 55 Malaysians who remain missing in the aftermath of the natural disasters. Due to the urgency and limited facilities available, some bodies were buried swiftly, underscoring the necessity of DNA testing to accurately identify the deceased.
The Malaysian team, comprising 11 members, is equipped with 12.4 tonnes of rescue apparatus, which includes detection tools, communication systems, high-capacity drones, and specialized equipment for tunnel rescues. In addition, the team has brought along a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to aid in the operational logistics.
The collective efforts in search, rescue, and DNA identification are aimed at locating missing individuals and providing closure to families awaiting news of their loved ones. Malaysia is hopeful that these measures will offer much-needed confirmation and peace of mind to the affected families amidst the tragedy.
