Malaysia and Myanmar Agree on Voluntary Repatriation of 5,000 Refugees

Malaysia is set to address the Myanmar refugee situation with a focus on national security and the well-being of its citizens, according to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The country is collaborating with Myanmar on a voluntary and phased repatriation plan for refugees, while also enhancing enforcement and coordination among government agencies and cooperating with countries of origin.

The agreement between Malaysia and Myanmar outlines the repatriation of 5,000 refugees in stages. The initial phase has commenced with 1,476 refugees starting the repatriation process after completing mutually agreed-upon procedures. This approach reflects Malaysia’s commitment to managing the refugee challenge, which has been a longstanding issue impacting the nation’s security, social services, and administrative infrastructure.

Anwar emphasized that the government’s strategy will adhere to national laws while considering humanitarian aspects. The collaborative effort underscores the need to balance national interests with compassion for those affected by the ongoing situation in Myanmar.
