Putin Introduces Insurance and Grain Market Plan for BRICS Members

In a push for stronger economic ties among BRICS nations, Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested the creation of a new insurance mechanism and a collective grain market. He emphasized the need for enhanced economic collaboration and the development of more autonomous financial and trade systems among the member states. During his speech at the BRICS outreach session, Putin advocated for the reinforcement of independent channels for capital, labor, and technology to mitigate vulnerabilities to external pressures.

“We have independent routes for moving capital, labour and technologies,” Putin stated, proposing that these routes be bolstered by an insurance mechanism and grain market available to other BRICS members. This proposal comes amid ongoing Western sanctions and insurance service restrictions impacting Russian energy exports. The European Union, G7, and the UK have imposed conditions on Western companies providing insurance for ships transporting Russian oil, contingent on adherence to certain price-cap conditions.

Highlighting the significance of financial cooperation, Putin commended the New Development Bank, which was established by the BRICS countries. He stressed the importance of expanding financial ties among emerging economies, suggesting that BRICS countries adopt a comprehensive approach to global challenges. This approach should address not only immediate impacts but also the root causes of international crises, according to Putin.

Furthermore, Putin called on nations in the Global South to collaborate on reforming global governance structures and tackling both traditional and new security issues. He noted the growing interest in BRICS and its initiatives as a reflection of the increasing international engagement with the group’s independent stance on global economic and political matters.
