Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing met in Hà Nội on September 5, marking the latter’s first official visit to Vietnam in his new capacity. The two leaders focused on bolstering bilateral relations and expanding collaboration in various sectors. Hưng reaffirmed Vietnam’s support for Myanmar’s journey towards stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic development, while Min Aung Hlaing lauded Vietnam’s socio-economic progress and its increasing influence on both regional and international stages. He expressed interest in learning from Vietnam’s development experience and emphasized Myanmar’s commitment to sustaining its traditional friendship and broad cooperation with Vietnam.
The leaders acknowledged recent advancements in their bilateral relations and agreed on the importance of enhancing high-level exchanges and political trust. They advocated for the revival of key cooperation mechanisms that encompass trade, security, and defense. In particular, defense and security cooperation was highlighted as a significant area of focus, with plans to intensify efforts against cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. Additionally, both countries aim to expand military training programs, young officer exchanges, and cooperation on non-traditional security challenges.
Economic ties featured prominently in their discussions. Both sides are keen to explore avenues to boost trade and update existing agreements related to trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar encouraged Vietnamese investment in several sectors, including telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure. The leaders also discussed enhancing infrastructure and air connectivity, with plans to restore direct flights and develop joint tourism initiatives, including spiritual and medical tourism.
Regarding regional affairs, Vietnam reiterated its commitment to working with ASEAN members to maintain dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both nations supported the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law. Furthermore, Hưng extended an invitation to Min Aung Hlaing to attend the CLMV Summit and chair the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội in November 2026. In response, the Myanmar president invited Hưng to visit Myanmar at a mutually convenient time, underscoring the ongoing commitment to strengthening their bilateral relationship.
