The Mole Hunt: How Mossad and the CIA Pierced the Leader’s Inner Circle

The precision of the strike that killed the Supreme Leader at his secure office has triggered a massive, paranoid “mole hunt” within the highest levels of the Iranian security services. For the Leader to be pinpointed and killed in a joint operation, there must have been a catastrophic failure in Iran’s internal security—or a high-level betrayal that reaches into the Leader’s own household.

The IRGC’s intelligence wing is currently conducting a “cleansing” of its ranks, with several mid-to-high level officers reportedly detained for questioning. The fact that the US and Israel were able to track a gathering of the country’s top defense council suggests that Iranian communications were compromised at the most fundamental level.

This internal distrust is paralyzing the state at a time when it needs to be most decisive. Every member of the interim council and the Assembly of Experts is now looking over their shoulder, wondering if their own secure locations are actually compromised. The “highly sophisticated tracking systems” mentioned by President Trump have turned the Iranian capital into a transparent battlefield.

The intelligence failure also extends to Iran’s regional allies. If the “head of the snake” could be so easily reached, groups like Hezbollah and the Houthis are questioning the security of their own leaders. This has led to a general “going dark” of the Axis of Resistance’s command-and-control, as everyone scrambles to change their encrypted protocols.

The “uncharted territory” for the IRGC is one where they can no longer trust their own shadows. Until they can identify the source of the leak, the Iranian leadership will remain in hiding, further weakening their ability to govern effectively or project power abroad.
