India, Japan Vow to Combat Pakistan-Based Terrorism, Enhance Counterterrorism Ties

During the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit held in New Delhi, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi jointly condemned terrorism and urged for stronger international measures against Pakistan-based militant groups, such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). The leaders stressed the need to hold accountable those responsible for terrorist acts and reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms.

In their joint statement, Modi and Takaichi denounced the terrorist attack in Pahalgam last year and acknowledged the United Nations Security Council Monitoring Team Report from July 29, 2025, which referenced The Resistance Front (TRF). They also condemned cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan, calling for coordinated global action against all United Nations-designated terrorist organizations, including Al Qaeda, ISIS/Daesh, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad, and their affiliates.

The leaders further condemned the Red Fort blast that occurred in New Delhi in November 2025, urging swift justice for those involved in planning, financing, and executing the attack. The statement highlighted the necessity of sustained international cooperation to combat violent extremism and bolster global security efforts against terrorist networks.

Beyond security concerns, the summit aimed to expand the strategic and economic partnership between India and Japan. Prime Minister Modi welcomed Takaichi on her first official visit to India as Japan’s prime minister, describing her as a visionary leader and affectionately referring to her as his “younger sister.” He emphasized the historical and cultural ties between the nations, noting Takaichi’s roots in Nara Prefecture, a region linked to their shared Buddhist heritage.

Prime Minister Takaichi echoed Modi’s sentiments, expressing that their discussions reflected a mutual commitment to deepening bilateral relations “as brother and sister.” Her visit to India, which took place from July 1 to 3 at Modi’s invitation, resulted in a series of new initiatives aimed at strengthening cooperation across strategic, economic, and cultural sectors. The summit reinforced the longstanding partnership between the two countries, emphasizing their shared focus on regional stability, security, and sustainable development.
